In short: the online leaderboard and the launch waitlist are both optional. The leaderboard only stores a nickname you choose, a random identifier and your results for each level — no email, no account. The waitlist only stores your email address and preferred language, so we can tell you when the game launches. We don't store your IP address or use ads or tracking cookies; we only count visits anonymously with Umami, on our own server. You can delete everything whenever you want.

Online leaderboard (in the game)

What we store

Only if you turn on the online leaderboard in the game, our server stores:

  • Your nickname (the one you choose, 3–16 characters).
  • A random player identifier, created together with your nickname.
  • A fingerprint (SHA-256 hash) of your access key. The key itself only lives on your device; we keep its fingerprint, which cannot be turned back into the key.
  • Your results per level: first-clear score, loops, time, attempts, retries, undone echoes, game version and the related dates.
  • A temporary per-minute request counter (to prevent abuse), discarded right away.

What we do NOT store

IP addresses, email, real name, location, contacts, or advertising/device identifiers.

Why

Only to show the leaderboards (global and per level) in the game and at playafterself.com/en/leaderboard/. Your nickname and results are public on those leaderboards. We don't sell or share data with third parties or use it for advertising.

How to delete your data

  • By email: write to privacy@playafterself.com with your nickname and we'll delete your player and all of its results.
  • From the game: the options let you turn the online leaderboard off or change your nickname. The game can also delete your profile instantly, together with all of its results (technically, DELETE /v1/players/me).
  • If you uninstall the game without deleting your profile, your key is lost and your nickname stays on the leaderboard; you can ask us to delete it by email.

Launch waitlist (email)

What we store

Only if you join the waitlist on this website, we store:

  • Your email address and the language you chose for our emails.
  • The status of your sign-up (pending or confirmed), the date you signed up, the date you confirmed, and when we last sent you a confirmation email (to limit abuse).
  • A fingerprint (SHA-256 hash) of the confirmation code in your email, never the code itself.

We don't store your IP address, and our emails contain no tracking pixels or tracked links.

Purpose and legal basis

We use your email only to tell you when Afterself launches and to send major release news (such as a playable demo): a handful of emails at most. We never sell or share it. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you give by ticking the box and then confirming the link we email you (double opt-in). You can withdraw it at any time, without affecting anything we did before.

How long we keep it

If you don't confirm, your sign-up is deleted automatically after 7 days. Confirmed addresses are kept until you unsubscribe, and at the latest until 12 months after the game launches, when we delete the whole list.

How to unsubscribe

Every email we send includes a link that deletes your address immediately. You can also write to privacy@playafterself.com from that address and we'll delete it.

This website

  • We count visits with Umami, running on our own server in the EU: no cookies, no stored IP addresses and no tracking across websites. We only see aggregate figures (page views, referrers, country, language, browser and device type). If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” signal, nothing is counted.
  • No ads and no tracking cookies. The font is served from our own domain.
  • If you pick a language in the language menu, we store a small cookie (lang, 1 year) to show you that language next time. It's used for nothing else and you can delete it from your browser at any time.

Where and for how long

Data is hosted on Cloudflare (Workers and the D1 database), and emails are sent through Resend from its EU region (Ireland); both act as our infrastructure providers (processors). Visit statistics are stored on our own OVH server in France. If Cloudflare IP addresses are blocked in Spain (this happens during some football matches), traffic may pass through that same server, which relays it to Cloudflare without logging it. Like any web server, Cloudflare briefly processes IP addresses to deliver traffic and protect it from abuse (for example, to limit how many waitlist sign-ups can come from the same connection); we don't log or store them. Leaderboard results are kept while your nickname stays on the leaderboard or until you ask us to delete them; waitlist data is kept as described above.

Your rights

You can access, correct (change your nickname), erase or object to the processing of your data, and withdraw your consent, by writing to privacy@playafterself.com. If you think we haven't handled your request properly, you can complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

The leaderboard doesn't ask for any personal data. Please don't use your real name or personal information as your nickname. If you're under 16, ask a parent or guardian before joining the waitlist.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above.
